Install Admingen

Install the ready-to-run generator, set up terminal commands and create your first project.

On this page

Admingen is distributed as ready-to-run builds. You do not need to build the generator from source.

There are two launch options:

Distribution Behavior
admingen and admingen-cli binaries Admingen opens the UI in your browser; CLI works with the same project from a terminal
Desktop packages Separate Linux/macOS applications with independent publication channels

The script below installs the binaries, not the Desktop application. Running the generator needs no Go, Node.js or Docker. Building/running a generated project does; see Local development.

Install binaries with curl

Open a terminal in a convenient directory:

curl -fsSL https://downloads.admingen.app/install.sh -o install-admingen.sh
bash install-admingen.sh

The first command saves the official installer, the second runs it. It selects the OS/processor, downloads a published version, verifies its checksum and installs both programs into ~/.local/bin. Sudo is unnecessary. Keep the script for later updates if desired.

The installer offers to add that directory to PATH and shows which shell files it will change. The default is No; changes require your agreement. After accepting, open a new terminal:

admingen --help
admingen-cli --help

If you decline, add the directory to your shell configuration yourself:

export PATH="$HOME/.local/bin:$PATH"

Usually this is ~/.zshrc for zsh or ~/.bashrc for Bash. Run the line separately to update the current terminal.

Additional installer options:

Option Purpose
--version VERSION Select a published version; replace VERSION, for example with 0.8.5 if available from the selected source
--install-dir "$HOME/bin" Choose another directory
--configure-path Explicitly permit PATH configuration without prompting
--no-modify-path Leave shell files unchanged
--base-url HTTPS_MIRROR Select another HTTPS build source

Download an archive manually

Choose the platform:

Computer PLATFORM
macOS Apple Silicon darwin_arm64
macOS Intel darwin_amd64
Linux Intel/AMD 64-bit linux_amd64
Linux ARM64 linux_arm64

The example below selects Linux Intel/AMD. Replace PLATFORM with the appropriate table value. VERSION reads the current published binary version from latest.txt:

DOWNLOADS=https://downloads.admingen.app
PLATFORM=linux_amd64
VERSION=$(curl -fsSL "$DOWNLOADS/latest.txt")
ARCHIVE="admingen_${VERSION}_${PLATFORM}.tar.gz"
curl -fL "$DOWNLOADS/releases/v$VERSION/$ARCHIVE" -o "$ARCHIVE"
mkdir admingen-unpacked
tar -xzf "$ARCHIVE" -C admingen-unpacked
cd admingen-unpacked
chmod +x admingen admingen-cli
./admingen --help

Release checksums are at $DOWNLOADS/releases/v$VERSION/checksums.txt. The quick installer verifies them automatically. If a download fails, do not continue by extracting an old file with the same name.

To run from any directory, copy both files into your PATH directory:

mkdir -p "$HOME/.local/bin"
cp admingen admingen-cli "$HOME/.local/bin/"

Desktop distribution

Linux Desktop publishes .deb; macOS publishes .dmg and .zip, separately for Intel/AMD and ARM64. Their publication is independent of binary install.sh: a new version in one channel does not mean all channels have been published. Select a package actually available for your channel and architecture. On Ubuntu/Debian, install a downloaded .deb with sudo apt install ./DOWNLOADED_FILENAME.deb; this installs a local package and does not configure an APT repository.

On macOS, open the .dmg and install the app normally. If the system blocks a download, confirm its source and use Privacy & Security settings instead of disabling system protection globally. Desktop and browser-binary UI work with the same projects but use different installation methods.

First project and updates

Continue with Your first project: create a directory, open UI and define the model. For browser-binary use, keep the admingen terminal open; Ctrl+C stops it.

To update binaries, stop the editor and rerun bash install-admingen.sh. Download it again using the command above if needed. For manual installation, replace both binaries from the new archive. Update Desktop with its channel's package.

Replacing the generator does not automatically modify projects or databases. Generate, migrations and deployment are separate actions.

Troubleshooting

  • command not found: check PATH or run ./admingen from its directory.
  • Permission denied: check executable permissions with chmod +x.
  • Exec format error / Bad CPU type: choose the correct OS and architecture.
  • 404: verify the download source and published version. Do not substitute an arbitrary version or continue from a partial download.

Homebrew and an APT repository are separate distribution methods; this guide does not require configuring either.
